Transportation Solutions to Move You Forward

Transportation Solutions to Move You Forward

Designing a transportation system today isn't as simple as asking, "Where should it go?"

Today's transportation planners face challenges early road and rail builders never imagined:

  • High-speed travel
  • Ever-increasing numbers of vehicles
  • Growing safety concerns
  • Environmental regulations

Burns & McDonnell's staff of transportation experts can help you meet your surface transportation challenges — including securing the leverage you need to get the most transportation dollars available.

We can get you on the road, whether you're looking at major highways, city streets, bridge repair/replacement or supporting studies and planning efforts.

Case Study: The Illinois Tollway

From the start of the Open Road Tolling program in fall 2004, Burns & McDonnell was part of the Illinois Tollway's program management team. The $800 million effort was part of the 10-year, $5.3 billion congestion-relief plan to reduce travel times in the Chicago metro.

The barrier-free system allows travelers with electronic toll payment to maintain highway speeds as they pass the toll plazas, reducing congestion.

Drivers paying with cash are funneled to lanes separate from the high-speed traffic, reducing travel times and improving safety on the road.

In all, 20 mainline toll plazas have been converted. Burns & McDonnell was the prime consultant for the design and reconstruction of the Waukegan Toll Plaza (Plaza 21), a site handling more than 100,000 vehicles each day.

Our offices nationwide addressed complex drainage design and staging issues to complete the project on a tight schedule with few changes during construction.

The project involved construction of new pavement, toll gates, plaza control buildings and Open Road Tolling collection infrastructure.
