Securing Your Facility with Building Security Ratings

Securing Your Facility with Building Security Ratings

If a security breach or terrorist attack occurs without warning, will your facility be vulnerable? And will your company be liable?

Ensure that appropriate structural, physical and operational safeguards are in place with a PLUSSM rating from the Building Security Council, prepared by trusted antiterrorism design leader Burns & McDonnell.

Solid Protection for Facilities and Occupants

Establish the security posture of your facility with a Promoting Logical Unified Security (PLUSSM) rating from the Building Security Council (BSC). Burns & McDonnell’s licensed professionals provide you with a comprehensive, coordinated and cost-effective roadmap for taking reasonable and appropriate steps to protect against a range of threats.

Designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT), a PLUSSM rating evaluates your facility’s attractiveness as a target and the capability of its countermeasures to defend against, respond to or recover from a malicious episode. The BSC’s risk-based framework provides standardized ratings on a scale from “rated” to “platinum” and aligns with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Reference Manual to Mitigate Potential Terrorist Attacks Against Buildings.

Tangible Benefits Through Security Ratings

Armed with this knowledge, you can confidently decide whether to invest further in protective measures. A PLUSSM rating provides independent verification from BSC that your facility complies with industry-accepted practices for building security as codified in federal agency guidelines. In addition, under the SAFETY Act, you may be exempt from many third-party claims following an act of terrorism that affects your facility.*

A PLUSSM rating can thus serve as a valuable risk management tool, assisting with decision support, loss control and liability mitigation. As a result, you may be able to save money over time on insurance premiums.

Secure Leader in Rating Facilities

Burns & McDonnell — a national leader in implementing the U.S. Department of Defense Minimum Antiterrorism Standards and the FEMA Risk Management Series guidelines — speaks from experience, as the first organization ever to prepare a PLUSSM rating and submit the necessary documentation to the BSC. Burns & McDonnell's director of antiterrorism services, Jon Schmidt, PE, BSCP, is a member of BSC's board of directors and chairs its Building Evaluation Committee, which is charged with administering the PLUSSM rating program.

So when it comes to protecting your assets, Burns & McDonnell can help you plan your defense.

* According to regulations adopted by DHS, a cause of action for performance or nonperformance of a QATT in relation to an act of terrorism may be brought only against the seller of the QATT. However, Burns & McDonnell cannot provide advice on the precise legal ramifications of obtaining a PLUSSM rating from BSC.
