Erie North Water Reclamation Facility

Location: Erie, Colo.

Client: Town of Erie

Completion Date: April 2011

Burns & McDonnell provided planning and design-build services for the new North Water Reclamation Facility for the Town of Erie, Colo. This facility is used in conjunction with the town's existing South Water Reclamation Facility to treat wastewater generated within the service area. The facility includes influent pumping, preliminary treatment, secondary treatment (including total nitrogen and total phosphorus reduction), ultraviolet light effluent disinfection, tertiary filtration, mechanical solids dewatering, administrative and laboratory facilities, and other site improvements. The secondary biological treatment process includes total phosphorus reduction and total nitrogen reduction using anaerobic and anoxic zones, followed by an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process with both clarifier recycle and internal aeration basin recycle streams. The solids stabilization process includes lime stabilization followed by heat pasteurization, creating Class A biosolids. Specialized equipment includes perforated plate band-screens, grit settling and separation, turbo blowers, tertiary disk filter, UV light disinfection, and a heated screw press.

The project initiated construction on Oct. 1, 2009, and was completed in April 2011.

The Erie North Water Reclamation Facility was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The project success was a result of a total team effort between the Town of Erie and the design-build team. It was awarded the 2011 Rocky Mountain Design-Build Institute of America Water/Wastewater Project of the Year and won a 2013 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado.
