Wastewater Master Plan Update

Wastewater Master Plan Update

Location: Bullhead City, Ariz.

Client: City of Bullhead City

Burns & McDonnell was selected to perform a wastewater master plan update for Bullhead City, Ariz. Because of the size and data-intensive nature of the project, a geographic information system (GIS) was developed to streamline the project and supplement the analytical modeling requirements.

The GIS provided a tool to easily store and utilize all project data for both the existing condition and future condition modeling efforts. A project database was developed in Microsoft Access, which housed the tabular information. Additionally, ARC/INFO and ArcView were used to manipulate and manage spatial data layers such as roads, pipe networks, pump stations, land use and watersheds. Data from the project database were joined with the spatial data layers to provide a highly accurate data model. Address matching or geocoding was performed on more than 16,000 addresses to accurately place wastewater dischargers by address to determine existing condition flows. The GIS also allowed for efficient development of future interceptors and flows by utilizing land use information and topographical data. All this information was combined into a format easily fed into the engineering model HydroWorks to determine system capacity.

Implementing a GIS for the master planning effort resulted in a more efficient and accurate analysis. This resulted in a more precise existing conditions model and a more realistic future conditions model. Bullhead City is better prepared to meet future demands of a growing population.
