Wastewater Master Plan - Lake Havasu

Wastewater Master Plan - Lake Havasu

Location: Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Client: City of Lake Havasu

How do you improve on standard civil engineering programs like HydroWorks? Automate the data input with geographic information systems (GIS). For Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Burns & McDonnell used GIS to generate the input and output data for the wastewater master plan.

After determining the needs for the study, the necessary data was collected. The data layers included land use, watersheds and sub-basins, buildout sectors, and areas served by sanitary sewer. The data originated in several formats. Burns & McDonnell used Arc/Info to complete the data conversion. Spatial analysis performed with Arc/Info and ArcView generated tabular data derived from information in the database. Included in the listing was the acreage and land use for each basin. After post processing, the data was input directly into the model.

This process had two benefits. First, when the data layers needed to be altered, the output of results had a fast turnaround. Second, the output data could be imported into any modeling package.
