Vent Collection and Thermal Oxidizer System Upgrades

Location: Barceloneta, Puerto Rico

Client: Abbott Laboratories

Abbott Laboratories Puerto Rico manufactures pharmaceuticals using various solvents in batch operations. The resulting volatile organic compound emissions streams are collected and treated in a thermal oxidizer. When the plant experienced higher emissions flow rates due to increased production and was also considering collection system safety upgrades, Abbott turned to Burns & McDonnell to evaluate and improve its vent collection and thermal oxidizer systems.

Burns & McDonnell worked with Abbott engineering and production personnel to collect vent header operating information including flow rates, temperatures, pressures and oxygen content. The field team also gathered existing equipment information and original system design documentation to assess system capacity limitations, safety concerns and maintenance and environmental issues and to propose corresponding upgrades. Key recommendations included installing new liquid collection tanks, fans, oxygen monitors and nitrogen injection valves, reconfiguring existing header sections, and relocating/adding deflagration protection devices.

Burns & McDonnell engineers then prepared a detailed design package for the recommended collection system upgrades. Engineering activities included:

  • Process flow diagrams
  • Material balance
  • Hydraulic study
  • Process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for all new piping and equipment
  • Updated versions of existing P&IDs depicting system upgrades
  • Equipment, instrument and input/output (I/O) lists
  • Equipment layouts
  • Piping drawings and isometrics
  • Equipment specifications
  • Instrument specifications
  • Controls philosophy descriptions
