Burns & McDonnell is the program manager on the Underground Transmission Initiative, a $531.5 million electrical transmission upgrade in the Greater Newark area in New Jersey. The initiative is a group of projects designed to meet long-term transmission needs. As part of PJM Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) these projects are identified by PJM to address load criteria short falls and fortify sections of the transmission grid.

Burns & McDonnell's scope includes:

  • 6 miles of new underground 230-kV 
  • 2.5-mile 230-kV station cut-in
  • One unidentified station cut-in
  • 14 230-kV and 138-kV circuit reconductorings totaling 64 miles

Work began in 2012 and is scheduled to be complete by 2016.
