U.S. Highway 287-Mountain View Avenue

U.S. Highway 287-Mountain View Avenue

Location: Longmont, Colo.

Client: City of Longmont, Colo.

Burns & McDonnell has recently completed the design and construction documents for improvements to the intersection of State Highway 287 and Mountain View Avenue. The proposed improvements will add dedicated right turn lanes to four legs of the intersection, relocate the existing signal poles, add additional signal equipment, and upgrade/improve the existing underground storm sewer system. Providing the additional lanes will require the widening of existing pavement on both Highway 287 and Mountain View Avenue and the reconstruction of several business and residential accesses. The final portion of the project construction includes a 2-inch-thick mill and overlay within the project limits.

The City of Longmont has received federal hazard elimination funding to construct the right turn lanes. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is responsible for the administration of the federal funds and the overall approval of the design. The preparation of the design, right-of-way plans, contract drawings and specifications has required coordination with CDOT due to the involvement of federal funds. Project development and plan format has been required to follow CDOT guidelines and policies, along with the full concurrence of the Local Agency Manual.

Due to the extent of the construction and traffic requirements, this small project has a seven stage phasing and traffic control plan. Numerous time and lane restrictions have been required upon the contractor's work, thereby requiring such complex traffic plans.
