Stormwater Management Master Plan

Location: Kansas City, Mo.

Client: City of Kansas City Water Services Department

Geographic information system (GIS) tools and related technologies can be used to centralize project data, expedite analyses and improve the quality of project deliverables. Burns & McDonnell is using these tools to provide information management and analytical support to the City of Kansas City Water Services Department's stormwater management master plan.

A database has been constructed and is being populated with available information and information from data conversion. GIS tools are providing linkage between tabular and spatial information to facilitate present and future stormwater system analyses. The department's preferred CAD software, Microstation, is being used to display analytical results.

Burns & McDonnell’s approach is efficient because project data is created one time for the entire set of project activities. Moreover, the quality of analyses and deliverables is improved by avoiding redundant data and focusing on the integrity of one data set.
