Squadron Operations Facility

Location: Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

Client: Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

Burns & McDonnell was responsible for electrical designs for three KC-10 squad operations facilities at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. The facilities consisted of approximately 150,000 square feet of administrative, flight planning, maintenance and storage areas.

The facility design included extensive voice and data communication systems as well as interconnected LAN design at each facility. The two-story facilities employed a combination of Cat 3, Cat 5, and fiber optic cabling for voice and data communications, and additionally required a facility-wide intercom and paging system. The facilities were also designed with coaxial style cables for distribution to an internal cable television system as well as an additional and separate closed circuit television system. A third specialized coaxial loop was provided to display information collected from a customer microwave system.

Additionally, two auditorium-style, 100-plus-seat classrooms were designed with integrated multimedia and audiovisual presentation functions, including large screen video projection, wireless audio systems, and touch screen podium controls of all system functions. Burns & McDonnell's design responsibilities also included facility power distribution involving prewired workstations or systems furniture, along with extensive use of automatic occupancy sensing for lighting systems control.
