Seminole Line Relocations

Seminole Line Relocations

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Client: Florida Power & Light

Completion Date: 2007

Burns & McDonnell provided transmission line engineering for the Seminole Transmission Line Relocation Project. This project involved routing, design and construction support for a 2.6-mile section of 138-kV line and a 1.6-mile section of 230-kV line.

  • Routing
  • Topographic survey
  • Transmission line design

Two Florida Power & Light (FPL) transmission lines that ran through Seminole Indian Reservation property needed to be relocated so the reservation could regain needed land to support development plans. Burns & McDonnell was selected for the project due to past successes on line modification projects for FPL.

Burns & McDonnell's Environmental Studies & Permitting Group studied the project area, factoring in the real estate use and value data and work with FPL to choose optimal routes for the relocated sections. Burns & McDonnell produced an economic line design that used guyed concrete pole construction in line with FPL standards. Burns & McDonnell hired a surveyor to produce the topographic survey and all easement exhibits and legal descriptions for FPL's real estate staff to obtain the necessary easements.

A key factor in the success of this project was the support provided by Burns & McDonnell during construction for the purposes of quality assurance, logistics of outages and line cut-over, and design changes to solve easement negotiation requirements.
