SPIDERS Integration Phase II

Location: Fort Carson, Colo.

Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District/Construction Engineering Research Laboratory

Completion Date: October 2013

Burns & McDonnell is the prime integrator for the design, construction and demonstration phases of this research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) and military construction (MILCON) project to implement and demonstrate an energy surety microgrid. The microgrid incorporates several diesel generators and a 2-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic array to provide efficient and reliable backup power to mission critical loads at the garrison. The project also includes development of bidirectional, fast-charging equipment for electric vehicles that also support grid service functions such as peak shaving and voltage regulation. All control and communications systems meet Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements.
