Power Supply Planning

Location: Southern United States

Client: Southern Mississippi Electric Power Association

Completion Date: 2012

Burns & McDonnell has conducted a series of supply- and demand-side analyses for Southern Mississippi Electric Power Association. We have used a variety of power supply planning production cost tools, including ProSym, ProMod and Strategist. For the demand-side analysis, we modeled several building types in SMEPA's service territory in eQuest to determine how a variety of demand-side options might benefit the demand and energy consumption in the buildings. The results of our analyses were provided in reports and presentations to the SMEPA management and board.

Burns & McDonnell has assisted South Mississippi Electric Power Association, a generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative headquartered in Hattiesburg, Miss., for a number of years with its power supply planning. These efforts have included a variety of supply- and demand-side analyses. We have managed Requests for Power Supply proposals for a variety of generation options. These have resulted in participation in coal resources and purchases of market capacity and energy. We have reviewed the conversion of numerous facilities to other operations, such as combined cycle. These studies resulted in the conversion of two units at the Moselle power plant to combined cycle operation.
