Runway Overlay and Rehabilitation

Location: New Century, Kan.

Client: New Century AirCenter

Burns & McDonnell provided design for the rehabilitation of Runway 17-35. The runway is currently 7,300 feet by 190 feet and is defined by the Federal Aviation Administration as an approach category/design group of D-II. The runway was originally designed and constructed in concrete for use by the Navy in the 1940s. Over the past 60 years, the pavement has had several asphalt overlays applied.

The completed design required the contractor to mill about 122,000 square yards of asphalt pavement and install more than 25,000 tons of new asphalt. In addition, the project included removal of 40 feet of paved shoulders, installation of new underdrains and high-intensity runway lights, pavement markings, removal and relocation of visual approach slope indicators and miscellaneous earthwork within the runway safety area.
