MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. is a leading worldwide producer of silicon wafers, which are the fundamental building blocks of semiconductors and are used by some of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world for every type of microelectronic application. These applications include computer systems, telecommunications equipment, automobile, consumer electronics products, industrial automation and control systems, and analytical and defense systems.

MEMC operates manufacturing facilities at locations throughout the world including St. Peters, Mo., the site of the largest silicon wafer plant in the United States as well as the location of MEMC's corporate headquarters. When MEMC decided to build a new materials research laboratory in an existing building at this Missouri manufacturing facility, it chose Burns & McDonnell to perform the preliminary and final design.

A new high-tech laboratory was needed to consolidate several research and development functions in a single location, support a variety of corporate silicon wafer product development and process improvement initiatives, and provide environmental conditions and clean space commensurate with research requirements. The laboratory includes three interrelated areas: general lab space, Class 100 clean room areas, and a RF shielded enclosure.
