Refined Products Terminal Upgrade/Expansion

Client: Flint Hills Resources

Burns & McDonnell provided engineering, procurement and construction for the upgrade/expansion of Flint Hills Resources' refined products terminal in Milwaukee. This facility has operated continuously as a petroleum storage and loading terminal since the late 1950s. The facility improvements included:

  • Upgrade of existing entrance and construction of a new exit gate
  • Modification of site to provide for separate entrance and exit gates to improve traffic flow
  • New truck loading rack with a pre-engineered steel canopy 85 feet long and 132 feet wide, four product loading bays and a service bay
  • New loading rack with kiosks, truck loading controls and card reader system
  • Ratio blending of gasoline products (octane levels of 87, 88, 89, 90, 91 and 92) to reduce busted load frequency
  • Demolition of the existing truck loading rack
  • New bill of lading facility
  • New fire foam building
  • Renovation of the existing operations and shop buildings; operations building repairs/improvements included a new roof, replacement of doors and windows, and new HVAC system, restroom, electrical system and interior finishes
  • Relocation of the filter building
  • New paved access road to the truck rack facility
  • Upgraded site utilities, mission control center and additive system
  • New Trans-Mix tank (5,000 BBL)
  • Upgrades to wet bottom detention pond and storm sewer conveyance system
  • New pumps and piping systems necessary for function of the site's facilities
  • Replacement of pipe supports for existing piping to remain
  • New programmable logic controller system

The facility remained in active service during construction, commissioning and startup activities.
