Readiness Group Training Building

Readiness Group Training Building

Location: Port Hueneme, Calif.

Client: Navy 31st Seabee

Burns & McDonnell provided design-build services for the Navy 31st SeaBee Readiness Training Facility. The project included a 2,800-square-foot rifle range and instruction building; a 10,500-square-foot administration and orientation training building; and a 15,500-square-foot classroom instruction building.

The project is LEED®-certified and features load-bearing masonry walls and standing seam metal roofing to match existing base design. Collaboration between architects, owners and engineers allowed the incorporation of natural ventilation maximizing the use of ocean breezes and the region’s naturally mild climate. Operable windows integrate with relief air vents in clerestories to naturally draw ventilation throughout the buildings. Occupied spaces are arranged to allow 90 percent of occupants a direct view of the outdoors. Water conservation measures implemented include low flow water closets, waterless urinals and natural plantings that require no permanent irrigation. Recycled materials were used when possible in new construction, and demolition debris was designed to be used as rip-rap to reinforce a nearby seawall.
