Rail Bridge over Longview Road

Rail Bridge over Longview Road

Location: South Kansas City, Mo.

Client: Jackson County Public Works

Longview Road is a primary suburban route on old alignment in a suburban area of South Kansas City, Mo. The route was upgraded from a basic two-lane roadway with sporadic past-developer constructed additions to a coordinated, four-lane urban arterial with turning lanes and signals at primary system intersections.

This project, the third of a sequence of projects designed by Burns & McDonnell, relocates the most difficult section of Longview Road at Blue Ridge Boulevard. Major design elements, in addition to the roadway and its drainage system, include retaining walls necessary to preserve the use of adjacent property.

The principal structure is a four-span through girder, ballasted deck bridge for the Kansas City Southern Railroad over Longview Road. The bridge was designed to meet very stringent competing limitations on vertical road clearance and high downstream flow line elevations of the drainage system. The project required right-of-way plans and descriptions for 29 residential and commercial tracts. A quarter-mile railroad shoofly was designed to maintain rail traffic during the work.
