Client: Jacksonville Electric Authority

Originally constructed in 1972, this double-circuit 230-kV line traverses a 28-mile course supported by 194 galvanized steel double pole structures. Many of the poles exhibited signs of corrosion and JEA needed a quick, cost-effective solution to replace the aging structures before they became a liability.

Burns & McDonnell worked with JEA to engineer a solution that fit the budgetary and outage constraints. One of the successes of this project was using existing foundations, eliminating the need for a major environmental assessment. Some of the activities performed by our engineers included specifying and procuring a LIDAR survey; incorporating the LIDAR survey into a PLS-CADD model of the existing line; developing structure design criteria; specifying, bidding, and purchasing new steel poles; and managing engineering, purchasing, and delivery around JEA’s outage constraints. The project has been a success meeting client requirements of replacing 194 structures in 2½ years.
