New Generation Large Fan Test Cell

Burns & McDonnell provided complete design services and construction administration for a new generation large-fan test cell for USAirways. The cell’s flow capacity is capable of 4,000 pounds per second engine mass flow and 4,000 pounds per second bypass, and for thrust ratings to 120,000 pounds. The engine run chamber is 40 feet square, with an overall cell length of 350 feet.

Services included feasibility and siting studies to FAA criteria and complete facilities design, including aerodynamics, acoustics, fueling systems, conveying systems and construction documents for competitive bidding.

Construction was phased and completed on schedule and under budget. Test cell emissions dispersion modeling to FAA criteria also was provided.
