Multi-Site Assessment/Remediation

Multi-Site Assessment/Remediation

Location: San Francisco

Burns & McDonnell managed assessment and remediation of six impacted sites at the United Airlines San Francisco Maintenance Center.

One of the sites, a hydrant fueling station, required a rapid response when a pipeline ruptured, discharging fuel to an adjacent storm drain. Contaminants at the other sites consist primarily of jet fuel, heating oil and chlorinated solvents.

Following site characterization activities, Burns & McDonnell assembled three dual-phase extraction trailers to recover liquid and vapor-phase contaminants. Two of the three trailers were rotated among five of the sites to decrease initial capital costs while maintaining remedial progress. A combination of physical contaminant removal and stimulation of indigenous bacteria has resulted in closure of three of the six sites within a three-year timeframe. Measurable free-phase product has been removed from the other sites.
