Bell Helicopter Textron Manufacturing & Plating Facility Consolidation

Bell Helicopter Textron Manufacturing & Plating Facility Consolidation

Location: Grand Prairie, Texas

Client: Bell Helicopter Textron Inc.

Burns & McDonnell provided design services for the development of capital budgets for the construction of a new 96,000-square-foot manufacturing facility with nine automated and three manual metal finishing lines for Plant 5 at Bell Helicopter Textron Inc., Grand Prairie, Texas. Spaces are provided for associated production areas, including heat treat processing, painting, laboratories, non-destructive testing, abrasive blasting, shot peen, industrial wastewater treatment and utility support systems. The project included facility and production flow requirements recommendation utilizing lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.

Processes analyzed were nickel plating, silver plating, copper plating, Dow #7 dichromate treatment, aluminum chromate treatment, cadmium plating, black oxide coating, sulfuric acid anodizing, material stripping, etching and impregnation treatments. Heat treat processes analyzed include carburizing, nitriding, vacuum, temper, anneal, hardening and cryogenic treatments. In addition, capital cost estimates, facility layouts, and product flow diagrams were generated for project development and implementation.

The project will result in meeting management criteria, 10-year production rates, and environmental, health and safety goals to reduce worker exposure hazards.
