Maintenance & Operations Facility - Travis AFB

Location: Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

Client: U.S. Air Force

Burns & McDonnell designed a 33,000-square-foot facility to house the 22nd Airlift maintenance and flight operations personnel and functions near Fairfield, Calif.

The facility includes command offices and conference rooms, a 100-seat auditorium, and open and private offices. The first- and second-floor lobbies are connected with an atrium that is open to a skylight, bringing natural light into the center of the building.

The design incorporates the flexibility to divide classrooms and training rooms into smaller or larger areas. All open office areas, private offices and classrooms have motion detectors to turn off lights when no one is in the room.

A special type of glass helps minimize heat gain, and windows are operable to allow cooling breezes into the building. The site design also allows visitor and base traffic to effectively coexist with squadron and hangar traffic.
