Burns & McDonnell provided professional services including design and procurement for the upgrade of existing limestone wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) system to achieve in excess of 95 percent SO2 removal at Westar's Jeffrey Energy Center Units 1, 2 and 3 in St. Marys, Kan.

The Jeffrey Energy Center project included upgrades to the existing WFGD system to replace the module internals, including mist eliminators. The project added forced oxidation, eliminated flue gas bypass, increased capacity of the limestone grinding system and added a gypsum dewatering system. Induced draft (ID) fans were upgraded and ductwork was replaced. The existing chimneys were modified for wet-stack operation including installation of a target wall, elevated liner floor, liquid collection systems, upgraded annulus pressurization system and replacement of materials not suitable for the corrosive wet environment. The gypsum waste material was disposed of in an on-site landfill.
