I-64 Interchange Design & Improvements

I-64 Interchange Design & Improvements

Location: St. Clair County, Ill.

Client: St. Clair County, IDOT District 8

Completion Date: 2007

Burns & McDonnell provided preliminary and final design for capacity improvements to a 7.2-mile segment of I-64 in St. Clair County, Ill. The project extends from IL-157 in Caseyville to Greenmount Road in O'Fallon.

Detailed interchange design studies were prepared for the interchanges at IL-157, IL-159 and West Highway 50, which include seven signalized intersections. Traffic operations analyses were performed on the freeway mainline, weaving sections, exit and entrance ramps, and ramp intersections. Improvements at the interchanges include ramp widening, auxiliary lanes, turn lane additions, signal modifications, lighting improvements and lowering of IL-157 to improve vertical clearance at the I-64 overpass. Turn movement counts were obtained for intersection design studies. Other services include noise impact analyses, an origin/destination study, public involvement, cost estimating, and a traffic management plan for maintaining four lanes of traffic during construction.

Design was completed for the Illinois Department of Transportation in December 2003. Construction was programmed in phases from 2004 through completion.

The project features interstate lane additions, interchange improvements, bridge reconstruction and widening, highway lighting and noise walls. Engineering tasks included geometric and capacity evaluations, inspection of seven bridges, a drainage study, lighting evaluation, traffic signal design, noise modeling, traffic management study, signage study and public involvement. The project included an alternative analysis examining alternatives, costs, potential accident reductions and road user benefits of adding lanes to 15 miles of highway from IL-157 to IL-4.
