Highway 2 Widening, 64th Avenue to Quebec Street

Highway 2 Widening, 64th Avenue to Quebec Street

Location: Commerce City, Colo.

Client: City of Commerce City, Colo.

Completion Date: 2004

Burns & McDonnell prepared the design and construction documents for the widening of Highway 2 from 64th Avenue to Quebec Street, approximately 2.2 miles, in Commerce City, Colo.

The design provides an additional northbound lane and new curb, gutter and sidewalk and an enclosed drainage system on the east side of the roadway. Since Highway 2 is a state route, extensive coordination with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) was required, especially with regard to drainage, traffic control and access issues. The Highway 2 corridor is heavily developed and particular attention was paid to minimizing the impact on existing facilities.

  • More than 60 Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) access permits
  • Public involvement program
  • Pavement design
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Right-of-way plats and easements
  • Construction phasing and traffic control plans
  • Design and contract documents for all proposed facilities
  • Construction services

Construction of the first phase of the project was completed in 2002. Construction of the second phase, which includes two stormwater pump stations, was completed in 2004.
