Greensfelder Park Improvements

Greensfelder Park Improvements

Location: West St. Louis County, Mo.

Client: St. Louis County Department of Parks & Recreation

Burns & McDonnell designed improvements at two picnic sites in Greensfelder Park in west St. Louis County. The project included renovating the picnic pavilions, providing handicap accessiblilty and landscaping.

At the Alex Muckerman Memorial Pavilion, a new parking lot was designed, along with an elevated wooden walkway connecting the parking area to the pavilion deck. The 100-foot walkway meanders through the woods and meets current ADA accessibility guidelines. Modifications were made to the existing deck, and the railing was reconstructed to meet safety codes. The existing stone structure was cleaned and restored, and the wooden roof was structurally repaired and covered with new roof tiles. A concrete stairway was also designed to connect the parking lot with the pavilion, and a new drinking fountain was installed adjacent to the existing deck.

The Dogwood Picnic Pavilion received structural repairs and roof tiles. In addition, a paved area with a barbecue grill and paved walkways connecting the pavilion to the parking lot and the parking lot to the playground were designed. Short decorative retaining walls were constructed to minimize any disruption to the existing parkland. A new prefabricated restroom building with drinking fountains was installed at the site, and lighting improvements were also included with the project.

Both sites were planted with native flowering and shade trees, including dogwood, redbud, oak and hickory.
