Gibson Station Units 1 & 2 Precipitator Replacements

Burns & McDonnell provided engineering and construction management services for a major program to install new electrostatic precipitators and Helvetica ductwork on Units 1 & 2 at the Gibson Generating Station. The station is owned by PSI Energy and each unit is rated approximately 650 MW. Burns & McDonnell prepared a study that evaluated 15 options for the addition of new particulate control equipment. The study was driven by the expected degradation of precipitator performance due to the lower sulfur coal required to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from these units. Burns & McDonnell provided the equipment and construction specifications for the precipitators with a flange-to-flange scope of work. We also provided the engineering for piling, foundations, connecting ductwork, gas flow model study, structural and support steel, ash handling system and demolition work. The new precipitators were constructed adjacent to the existing precipitators. Most of the construction was completed with the generating units in operation, requiring only a very minimal unit outage to make the change over to the new precipitators.
