Burns & McDonnell designed the University of Alabama's $17 million East Quad Central Utility Plant as one of two on-site energy plants that comprise the university's new distributed energy system. Designed for efficiency, reliability and economic payback, the plant features a stately brick facade and two-story arched windows to complement the campus architecture. Designed for expansion to 9,600 tons of cooling and 3,000 horsepower of boilers, the plant will initially include three 1,200-ton chillers and two 600-horsepower hot water boilers, with cooling towers on the rooftop.
