Digester Repair and Improvements

Digester Repair and Improvements

Location: Rapid City, S.D.

Client: City of Rapid City

Burns & McDonnell completed a detailed evaluation of the existing solids processing and handling system at the City of Rapid City's Water Reclamation Facility. The project was a result of budgeted improvements to the existing anaerobic digesters, including repair or replacement of the digester covers, the boiler/heat exchanger system and the digester gas handling system.

Given the potential costs of these anticipated anaerobic digester improvements, the project also included an evaluation of the overall solids processing and handling system and its ability to meet current and future needs, and coordination with the requirements of the city's co-composting facility. A four-phase improvements plan was recommended and included replacement of the existing gas-holder primary digester covers with fixed covers, replacement of the gas-mixing system, replacement of the gas-holder secondary digester cover with a larger capacity gas-holder cover, replacement of the combination boiler/heat exchangers with larger capacity units, and several other system improvements.
