Data Conversion & Geodatabase Design

Data Conversion & Geodatabase Design

Location: O'Fallon, Ill.

Client: City of O'Fallon, Public Works Department

For the city of O’Fallon, Ill., Burns & McDonnell was selected to do a water distribution system master plan. The water master plan was built upon an ESRI enterprise geodatabase model for the water distribution system. The geodatabase design had to support both the water master plan and the city’s Azteca Cityworks maintenance management system. In order to accommodate these two processes, Burns & McDonnell redesigned the water distribution system data model with Unified Modeling Language (UML) tools and then provided the city with a new enterprise geodatabase and UML model of their geodatabase.

With the data model for the water distribution system complete, Burns & McDonnell converted the city’s existing hardcopy design drawings into the geodatabase. More than 900 design drawings were geo-referenced and converted into data within the geodatabase. The data collection included all water distribution features found on design drawings including: mains, valves, fittings, hydrants, tanks, pumps and control structures. A total of 233 miles of water mains were collected and almost 8,000 different point features. The features were housed in a geometric network dataset that ensured proper feature connectivity or topology, which was essential for the integrity of the data.

Upon completion of the data conversion process, the city began to use the water distribution system data within the Cityworks maintenance management system. As the city began to use the data for day-to-day maintenance activities, Burns & McDonnell built predictive hydraulic models on the data. The MWH Soft H20Map Water software was fed from the water distribution geodatabase and any modeling results were then pushed back into the geodatabase for analysis, visualization and mapping purposes. The final result of the project was a robust geodatabase that was able to support multiple functions within the city.
