Burns & McDonnell has assisted CenterPoint Energy with more than 200 substation projects since 2005, providing engineering services and project management support services.

  • Install new control houses and complete substation relaying design for various substations in Galveston after flooding from Hurricane Ike
  • Install various 345-kV/138-kV auto transformers and associated protective relaying
  • Provide greenfield relaying and structural engineering support for various 138-kV and 345-kV substations
  • Separate/isolate battery potentials in existing substation protection schemes
  • Install new outdoor 35-kV distribution equipment
  • Upgrade transmission-line protection relays, ranging from 138-kV to 345-kV 
  • Upgrade existing pilot protection schemes with new power-line carrier relays
  • Upgrade or implement new fiber optic communications for transmission-line relay protection
  • Provide relaying and structural engineering support for replacement of 138-kV circuit breakers and circuit switchers
  • Replace/upgrade various substation computers and Remote Terminal Units (RTU)
  • Install new capacitor banks for various substations, ranging from 12-kV to 138-kV
  • Install new or upgrade existing fault reporter equipment for numerous substations
  • Perform lightning protection studies and provide appropriate recommendations
  • Provide grounding studies and design support for substation reconfigurations
