Biomass Feasibility Study

Biomass Feasibility Study

Location: Near Montpelier, Iowa

Client: Central Iowa Power Cooperative

Completion Date: 2008

Burns & McDonnell was retained to conduct a study of potentially viable alternative fuels for the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) Fair Station Power Plant near Montpelier, Iowa. As part of its sustainability initiatives, CIPCO was looking to integrate biomass fuel sources into its current coal operating systems, reducing coal consumption and carbon emissions while reusing current waste materials produced as byproducts from wood and agro-crops or from municipal/industrial waste production.

  • Identification of alternative fuel sources
  • Alternative fuel availability
  • Fuel transportation analysis
  • Total delivered fuel cost

Burns & McDonnell's completed the following tasks in assessing the feasibility of biomass co-firing at the CIPCO's facility:

  • Created a list of potentially viable feedstock options based on the price of fuel at the plant location, truck delivery distances to Fair Station, and potential for economic delivery by barge
  • Reviewed the fuel characteristics for each feedstock option
  • Contacted potential suppliers and gathered basic information on the quantity and reliable availability of the feedstock options
  • Developed high-level economics for each option to estimate the total delivered price of fuel at Fair Station
  • Identified potential fuel handling issues imposed by the feedstock options
