Biomass Energy Center

Biomass Energy Center

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected this innovative biomass energy center as a demonstration project to study the promising application of offsetting the natural gas consumed in process steam for commercialized use throughout the food processing industry.

As engineer-procure-construct contractor, Burns & McDonnell designed this 13,400-square-foot, 60,000-pounds-per-hour, stoker-fired boiler biomass energy center. The boiler burns wood waste and tire-derived fuel to produce steam with an output of up to 78.3 million British thermal units-per-hour.

As the client’s first biomass plant, it contributes to corporate sustainability initiatives as a zero-landfill facility. In addition to reducing natural gas consumption, two banks of cyclone dust collectors and an electrostatic precipitator control particulate matter emissions. The byproduct of the biomass operation is expected to produce 515 pounds-per-hour of fly ash, which will be recycled in the cement industry.

Burns & McDonnell also provided startup and commissioning services for this DOE demonstration project.
