Big Bend Road Improvements

Location: St. Louis

Client: St. Louis County Department of Highways & Traffic

Big Bend Road is a two-lane collector in a heavily urbanized area of west St. Louis County. Burns & McDonnell prepared right-of-way and construction plans for this approximately 1-mile improvement. This stretch of Big Bend Road consisted of widening this two-lane facility to a five-lane urban collector with sidewalks on both sides. The project presented major profile grade changes with side street connections and limited right-of-way.

Burns & McDonnell coordinated the design with an adjacent development, utility companies, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The improvements included enclosed drainage, retaining walls and landscaped medians. The improvements also included channel improvements and a triple cell box culvert.

Construction needed to be staged in order to keep this heavily traveled road accessible during construction. Traffic phasing presented several major obstacles:

  • Major grade changes
  • Limited right-of-way
  • Several side streets
  • New culvert construction
